SL 2.6 — The modelling process(モデリングの手順)

ノートWhat you should be able to do

\[ \varepsilon = \left| \frac{v_A - v_E}{v_E} \right| \times 100\% \]

Use the modelling process … to create, fit and use the theoretical models in section SL2.5 and their graphs.

The idea

1. modelling process

図 1: The modelling process

1. Pose the real-world problem
2. Develop and fit the model
3. Test and reflect upon the model
4. Use the model

Justify the choice of a particular model, based on the shape of the data, properties of the curve and/or on the context of the situation.

the shape of the data
properties of the curve asymptote
2: Choosing a model that follows the shape of the data

An exponential model, because each value is 1.5 times the one before, so the ratio between consecutive values is constant.

3. reasonable domain

Determine a reasonable domain for a model.

By setting up and solving equations simultaneously (using technology), by consideration of initial conditions or by substitution of points into a given function.

道すじ1:initial condition(はじめの値)

  • \(f(x) = mx + c\) なら、\(f(0) = c\)
  • \(f(x) = ka^{x}\) なら、\(f(0) = k\)
  • \(f(x) = ka^{x} + c\) なら、\(f(0) = k + c\)SL 2.5

  • \(f(x) = ka^{x} + c\) なら \(k + c = 500\)

\[ 500a^{4} = 1200 \ \Rightarrow \ a^{4} = 2.4 \ \Rightarrow \ a = 1.244\ldots \]

At SL, students will not be expected to perform non-linear regressions, but will be expected to set up and solve up to three linear equations in three variables using technology.

\(f(x) = ax^{2} + bx + c\)\(a\)\(b\)\(c\)

\[ \begin{aligned} a + b + c &= 6 \\ 9a + 3b + c &= 10 \\ 36a + 6b + c &= 4 \end{aligned} \tag{1}\]

menu → Algebra → Solve System of Linear Equations

Fitting models using regression is covered in topic 4.

Comment on the appropriateness and reasonableness of a model.

The model gives 41.9 while the measured value is 42.5, a percentage error of 1.36%. This is small, and the curve follows the shape of the data, so the model is appropriate over this range.

Students should be aware of the dangers of extrapolation.

図 3: Interpolation and extrapolation
表 6: interpolation と extrapolation
English

The prediction is not reliable, because \(t = 40\) is far outside the range of the data used to make the model. This is extrapolation.

Why it works

Worked examples

1 A company’s monthly profit, \(P\) thousand dollars, when it spends \(x\) thousand dollars on advertising is modelled by

\[ P(x) = ax^{2} + bx + c \]

The company has recorded the following data.

表 7: Recorded data
Advertising \(x\) (thousand dollars) 1 3 6
Profit \(P\) (thousand dollars) 6 10 4

(a) Write down three equations in \(a\), \(b\) and \(c\).

(b) Use your GDC to find the values of \(a\), \(b\) and \(c\).

(c) Find the amount the company should spend on advertising to maximise its profit.

(d) Explain why a quadratic model is appropriate for this situation.

\[ a(1) + b(1) + c = 6 \ \Rightarrow \ a + b + c = 6 \]

\[ \begin{aligned} a + b + c &= 6 \\ 9a + 3b + c &= 10 \\ 36a + 6b + c &= 4 \end{aligned} \]

menu → Algebra → Solve System of Linear Equations
Number of equations: 3
Number of unknowns: 3

\[ a = -0.8, \qquad b = 5.2, \qquad c = 1.6 \]

\(9(-0.8) + 3(5.2) + 1.6 = -7.2 + 15.6 + 1.6 = 10\)

\[ x = -\frac{b}{2a} = -\frac{5.2}{2(-0.8)} = 3.25 \]

The profit rises and then falls as spending increases, and a quadratic model has exactly this shape, with a single maximum point.

(a) \(a + b + c = 6\), \(9a + 3b + c = 10\), \(36a + 6b + c = 4\)

(b) \(a = -0.8\), \(b = 5.2\), \(c = 1.6\)

(c) \(x = -\dfrac{5.2}{2(-0.8)} = 3.25\), so the company should spend 3250 dollars.

(d) The profit rises and then falls as spending increases, and a quadratic model has exactly this shape, with a single maximum point.

例題 2 The number of fish in a lake is modelled by \(N(t) = ka^{t}\), where \(t\) is the number of years after the fish were introduced.

There were 500 fish at the start, and 1200 fish after 4 years.

(a) Write down the value of \(k\).

(b) Find the value of \(a\), correct to three significant figures.

(c) Use the model to predict the number of fish after 10 years.

(d) Comment on the reliability of your answer to part (c).

\(a^{0} = 1\) なので

\[ N(0) = k a^{0} = k = 500 \]

\[ 500a^{4} = 1200 \ \Rightarrow \ a^{4} = 2.4 \ \Rightarrow \ a = 1.2446\ldots \]

\[ N(10) = 500(1.2446\ldots)^{10} = 4461.6\ldots \]

The prediction is not very reliable, because \(t = 10\) is outside the range of the data, which only goes up to \(t = 4\). The lake may also not have enough food for so many fish.

(a) \(k = 500\)

(b) \(500a^{4} = 1200 \Rightarrow a^{4} = 2.4 \Rightarrow a = 1.24\) (3 s.f.)

(c) \(N(10) = 500(1.2446\ldots)^{10} = 4461.6\ldots\), so about 4460 fish.

(d) The prediction is not very reliable, because \(t = 10\) is outside the range of the data, which only goes up to \(t = 4\).

例題 3 A Ferris wheel has a radius of 20 metres. The lowest seat on the wheel is 2 metres above the ground.

Sam gets on at the lowest seat, and the wheel starts to turn. The wheel takes 120 seconds to make one complete turn.

The height of Sam’s seat above the ground, \(h\) metres, at time \(t\) seconds after the wheel starts, is modelled by

\[ h(t) = a\cos(bt) + d \]

(a) Find the value of \(d\) and the value of \(a\).

(b) Show that \(b = 3\).

(c) Find the height of Sam’s seat 20 seconds after the wheel starts.

(d) The ride lasts 4 minutes. Write down a reasonable domain for the model, and give a reason for your answer.

4: A Ferris wheel and its height model

SL 2.5 の \(\text{maximum} = d + |a|\)\(\text{minimum} = d - |a|\) を、\(d\)\(|a|\) について解き直した形を使います。

\[ d = \frac{\text{max} + \text{min}}{2} = \frac{42 + 2}{2} = 22, \qquad |a| = \frac{\text{max} - \text{min}}{2} = \frac{42 - 2}{2} = 20 \]

\[ h(0) = a \times 1 + 22 = a + 22 \]

\[ a + 22 = 2 \ \Rightarrow \ a = -20 \]

\(a = -20\)\(d = 22\) です。

\[ \text{period} = \frac{360}{b} = 120 \ \Rightarrow \ b = \frac{360}{120} = 3 \]

\[ h(20) = -20\cos(3 \times 20) + 22 = -20\cos(60^{\circ}) + 22 = -20(0.5) + 22 = 12 \]

\[ 0 \leq t \leq 240 \]

\(0 \leq t \leq 240\), because the ride starts at \(t = 0\) and lasts 4 minutes, which is 240 seconds.

(a) max \(= 42\), min \(= 2\)

\(d = \dfrac{42 + 2}{2} = 22\)

\(h(0) = a + 22 = 2 \Rightarrow a = -20\)

(b) period \(= 120\), so \(\dfrac{360}{b} = 120 \Rightarrow b = 3\)

(c) \(h(20) = -20\cos(60^{\circ}) + 22 = 12\) m

(d) \(0 \leq t \leq 240\), because the ride starts at \(t = 0\) and lasts 4 minutes, which is 240 seconds.

例題 4 Two students each collect a set of data.

表 8: The two data sets
\(x\) 0 1 2 3 4
Set A 20 30 45 67.5 101.25
Set B 12 19 26 33 40

(a) For Set A, state which model on the syllabus is appropriate and justify your choice.

(b) Find the model for Set A.

(c) For Set B, state which model on the syllabus is appropriate and justify your choice.

(d) Find the model for Set B.

\[ \frac{30}{20} = 1.5, \quad \frac{45}{30} = 1.5, \quad \frac{67.5}{45} = 1.5, \quad \frac{101.25}{67.5} = 1.5 \]

An exponential model, because each value is 1.5 times the one before, so the ratio between consecutive values is constant.

A linear model, because the value increases by 7 each time \(x\) increases by 1, so the difference between consecutive values is constant.

(a) An exponential model, because each value is 1.5 times the one before, so the ratio between consecutive values is constant.

(b) \(f(x) = 20(1.5)^{x}\)

(c) A linear model, because the value increases by 7 each time \(x\) increases by 1, so the difference between consecutive values is constant.

(d) \(f(x) = 7x + 12\)

例題 5 Data on the height of a child was collected between the ages of 2 and 10 years. The height, \(h\) cm, at age \(t\) years is modelled by

\[ h(t) = 6t + 76 \]

(a) Use the model to find the height of the child at age 5.

(b) Interpret the value 6 in the context of the question.

(c) The model gives \(h(40) = 316\). Comment on this value.

(d) State a reasonable domain for this model.

The child grows about 6 cm each year.

A height of 316 cm is not possible. The value \(t = 40\) is far outside the range of the data, so using the model here is extrapolation and the answer is not reliable.

\[ 2 \leq t \leq 10 \]

(a) \(h(5) = 6(5) + 76 = 106\) cm

(b) The child grows about 6 cm each year.

(c) A height of 316 cm is not possible. The value \(t = 40\) is far outside the range of the data, so using the model here is extrapolation and the answer is not reliable.

(d) \(2 \leq t \leq 10\)

例題 6 A student models the temperature of a cooling liquid, in degrees Celsius, \(t\) minutes after the start, by

\[ T(t) = 60(0.9)^{t} + 21 \]

The table shows the temperatures the student measured.

表 9: The measured temperatures
Time \(t\) (minutes) 5 10 20
Measured temperature (\(^\circ\)C) 56.5 42.5 28.5

(a) Find \(T(10)\), correct to three significant figures.

(b) Find the percentage error in the value given by the model at \(t = 10\), correct to three significant figures.

(c) Comment on the appropriateness of the model.

\[ T(10) = 60(0.9)^{10} + 21 = 41.92\ldots \]

\[ \varepsilon = \left| \frac{41.92 - 42.5}{42.5} \right| \times 100\% = 1.363\ldots\% \]

At all three times the model is within 1.4% of the measured temperature, so the model is appropriate for this liquid over the first 20 minutes.

(a) \(T(10) = 41.92\ldots = 41.9\) degrees (3 s.f.)

(b) \(\varepsilon = \left| \dfrac{41.92 - 42.5}{42.5} \right| \times 100\% = 1.36\%\) (3 s.f.)

(c) At all three times the model is within 1.4% of the measured temperature, so the model is appropriate for this liquid over the first 20 minutes.

Common errors

Comment on the reliability

Using your GDC (TI-Nspire CX II)

menu → Algebra → Solve System of Linear Equations
Number of equations: 3
Number of unknowns: 3

2.4^(1/4) → ctrl + var → ra (好きな名前でよい)
500 * ra^10

ctrl + doc → Add Data & Statistics
menu → Plot Type → Scatter Plot
menu → Analyze → Plot Function f1(x) = 20*1.5^x

Plot Function

Exercises

1 The height of a water jet above the ground, \(y\) metres, at a horizontal distance \(x\) metres is modelled by \(y = ax^{2} + bx + c\). The jet passes through the points \((0,\ 4)\), \((2,\ 12)\) and \((5,\ 9)\).

(a) Write down three equations in \(a\), \(b\) and \(c\).

(b) Use your GDC to find the values of \(a\), \(b\) and \(c\).

(c) Find the maximum height of the jet.

(a) \(c = 4\), \(4a + 2b + c = 12\), \(25a + 5b + c = 9\)

(b) \(a = -1\), \(b = 6\), \(c = 4\)

(c) \(x = -\dfrac{6}{2(-1)} = 3\) and \(y = -9 + 18 + 4 = 13\), so the maximum height is 13 m.

2 A taxi fare, \(C\) dollars, for a journey of \(d\) km is modelled by \(C = md + c\). A journey of 2 km costs 58 dollars and a journey of 7 km costs 88 dollars.

(a) Find the value of \(m\) and the value of \(c\).

(b) Interpret the value of \(c\) in the context of the question.

(c) Find the cost of a journey of 12 km.

(a) \(m = \dfrac{88 - 58}{7 - 2} = 6\) and \(58 = 6(2) + c\), so \(c = 46\)

(b) The fixed charge for getting into the taxi is 46 dollars, before any distance is travelled.

(c) \(C = 6(12) + 46 = 118\) dollars

3 The value of a machine, \(V\) dollars, \(t\) years after it is bought is modelled by \(V(t) = ka^{t}\). The machine cost 18 000 dollars when new, and after 5 years it is worth 9000 dollars.

(a) Write down the value of \(k\).

(b) Find the value of \(a\), correct to three significant figures.

(c) Find the value of the machine after 8 years, correct to three significant figures.

(a) \(k = 18\,000\)

(b) \(18\,000a^{5} = 9000 \Rightarrow a^{5} = 0.5 \Rightarrow a = 0.871\) (3 s.f.)

(c) \(V(8) = 18\,000(0.8705\ldots)^{8} = 5937.7\ldots = 5940\) dollars (3 s.f.)

(b) \(5\) 年で半分になるので \(a^{5} = 0.5\)\(a = 0.5^{1/5} = 0.8705\ldots\) です。

4 Two sets of data are shown below.

表 10: The two data sets
\(x\) 0 1 2 3 4
Set C 5 8 11 14 17
Set D 80 60 45 33.75 25.3125

(a) For each set, state which model is appropriate and justify your choice.

(b) Find the model for Set D.

(a) Set C: a linear model, because the value increases by 3 each time \(x\) increases by 1, so the difference between consecutive values is constant.

Set D: an exponential model, because each value is 0.75 times the one before, so the ratio between consecutive values is constant.

(b) \(f(x) = 80(0.75)^{x}\)

5 A ball is thrown from a cliff. Its height above the sea, \(h\) metres, after \(t\) seconds is modelled by \(h(t) = -5t^{2} + 10t + 40\). The ball hits the sea after 4 seconds.

(a) State a reasonable domain for this model.

(b) Explain why \(t = 6\) is not in the domain.

(c) Find the height of the ball after 1 second.

(a) \(0 \leq t \leq 4\)

(b) After 4 seconds the ball is already in the sea, so it is no longer falling through the air and the model no longer describes the situation.

(c) \(h(1) = -5 + 10 + 40 = 45\) m

6 The number of people using a new app was recorded each week for the first 8 weeks, and modelled by \(N(w) = 200(1.4)^{w}\), where \(w\) is the number of weeks.

(a) Find the number of users after 6 weeks.

(b) The model predicts about 4.84 million users after 30 weeks. Comment on this prediction.

(a) \(N(6) = 200(1.4)^{6} = 1505.9\ldots\), so about 1510 users.

(b) The prediction is not reliable. \(w = 30\) is far outside the 8 weeks of data used to build the model, so this is extrapolation. In practice the growth would slow down once most interested people have the app.

7 A model predicts that the mass of a substance after 12 hours is 34.4 grams. The measured mass was 35.1 grams.

(a) Find the percentage error in the value given by the model, correct to three significant figures.

(b) Comment on the appropriateness of the model at this time.

(a) \(\varepsilon = \left| \dfrac{34.4 - 35.1}{35.1} \right| \times 100\% = 1.99\%\) (3 s.f.)

(b) The model is within 2% of the measured mass, so it is appropriate at this time.

8 The depth of water in a harbour is modelled by \(d(t) = a\sin(bt) + c\), where \(t\) is the time in hours after midnight. The maximum depth is 14 metres, the minimum depth is 2 metres, and the pattern repeats every 24 hours.

(a) Find the value of \(c\).

(b) Find the value of \(a\).

(c) Find the value of \(b\).

(a) \(c = \dfrac{14 + 2}{2} = 8\)

(b) \(a = \dfrac{14 - 2}{2} = 6\)

(c) \(\dfrac{360}{b} = 24\), so \(b = 15\)

9 Two students propose different models for the same set of data. At \(x = 6\) the measured value is 30. Model 1 gives 28.9 and Model 2 gives 31.8.

(a) Find the percentage error of each model at \(x = 6\), correct to three significant figures.

(b) State which model fits better at \(x = 6\), and give a reason.

(c) Explain why this comparison is not enough to decide which model is better overall.

(a) Model 1: \(\left| \dfrac{28.9 - 30}{30} \right| \times 100\% = 3.67\%\) (3 s.f.)

Model 2: \(\left| \dfrac{31.8 - 30}{30} \right| \times 100\% = 6.00\%\) (3 s.f.)

(b) Model 1 fits better at \(x = 6\), because its percentage error of 3.67% is smaller than the 6.00% of Model 2.

(c) This is only one data point. A model could fit well at \(x = 6\) but badly everywhere else, so all the data points must be compared before deciding.

(b)give a reason

10 A student is given a set of data and asked to build a model. Describe, in order, the stages of the modelling process the student should follow.

  1. Pose the real-world problem and decide what is being modelled.

  2. Develop and fit the model: choose an appropriate model from the shape of the data, decide a reasonable domain, and find the parameters.

  3. Test and reflect upon the model: compare it with the data and comment on how well it fits. If it does not fit, go back and change it.

  4. Use the model: read values from it and make predictions, being careful about extrapolation.
