HL 3.15 — Coincident, parallel, intersecting and skew lines(\(2\)
- \(2\) 直線が coincident(一致)・parallel(平行)・intersecting(交わる)・skew(ねじれの位置)のどれかを判定できる。
The idea
1. Four possibilities(\(4\)
|---|---|---|
| coincident(一致) | 平行 | すべて |
| parallel(平行) | 平行 | なし |
| intersecting(交わる) | 平行でない | \(1\) つ |
| skew(ねじれの位置) | 平行でない | なし |
2. Skew lines(ねじれの位置)
3. Two parameters, two letters(媒介変数は \(2\) 文字)
\[ l_{1}: \ \mathbf{r} = \mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1}, \qquad l_{2}: \ \mathbf{r} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\mu\mathbf{b}_{2} \tag{1}\]
4. Parallel or not(方向を見る)
5. Coincident or just parallel(一致か、平行か)
「\(\mathbf{a}_{2}\) が \(l_{1}\) の上にある」は、\(\mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1} = \mathbf{a}_{2}\) を満たす \(\lambda\) があるかどうかです。
1 Show that the lines
\[ l_{1}: \ \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 2 \\ 3 \end{pmatrix}+\lambda\begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ -1 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad l_{2}: \ \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}+\mu\begin{pmatrix} 4 \\ -2 \\ 8 \end{pmatrix} \]
are parallel but not coincident.
\[ \begin{pmatrix} 4 \\ -2 \\ 8 \end{pmatrix} = 2\begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ -1 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix} \]
\[ 1+2\lambda = 0 \ \Rightarrow \ \lambda = -\frac{1}{2}, \qquad 2-\lambda = 2+\frac{1}{2} = \frac{5}{2} \neq 0 \]
\(\begin{pmatrix} 4 \\ -2 \\ 8 \end{pmatrix} = 2\begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ -1 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix}\), so the direction vectors are parallel.
If \((0,\ 0,\ 0)\) were on \(l_{1}\), then \(1+2\lambda = 0\) gives \(\lambda = -\dfrac{1}{2}\), but then \(y = \dfrac{5}{2} \neq 0\).
So the lines are parallel and distinct, not coincident.
例題 2 Determine the relationship between the lines
\[ l_{1}: \ \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ -1 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix}+\lambda\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 3 \\ -2 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad l_{2}: \ \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 4 \\ 5 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}+\mu\begin{pmatrix} -2 \\ -6 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix} \]
\[ \begin{pmatrix} -2 \\ -6 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix} = -2\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 3 \\ -2 \end{pmatrix} \]
\[ 2+\lambda = 4 \ \Rightarrow \ \lambda = 2 \]
\[ -1+3(2) = 5 \ \checkmark, \qquad 4-2(2) = 0 \ \checkmark \]
\(\begin{pmatrix} -2 \\ -6 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix} = -2\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 3 \\ -2 \end{pmatrix}\), so the lines are parallel.
Putting \(\lambda = 2\) in \(l_{1}\) gives \(\begin{pmatrix} 4 \\ 5 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}\), a point of \(l_{2}\).
Parallel lines with a common point are the same line, so \(l_{1}\) and \(l_{2}\) are coincident.
First compare the directions.
Since \(\begin{pmatrix} -2 \\ -6 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix} = -2\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 3 \\ -2 \end{pmatrix}\), the second direction vector is a non-zero scalar multiple of the first, so the two lines are parallel.
The multiplier is negative, which only means the two equations run along the line in opposite senses; it does not affect whether they are parallel.
Parallel lines are either coincident or completely disjoint, so it is enough to test one point.
Take the point of \(l_{2}\) with position vector \(\begin{pmatrix} 4 \\ 5 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}\) and ask whether it lies on \(l_{1}\).
The first component gives \(2+\lambda = 4\), so \(\lambda = 2\).
Substituting this value into the other two components gives \(-1+3(2) = 5\) and \(4-2(2) = 0\), which both agree.
So a single value of \(\lambda\) reproduces all three coordinates, the point lies on \(l_{1}\), and the two lines are coincident: they are two different equations for the same line.
6. Intersecting or skew(交わるか、ねじれか)
\[ \mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\mu\mathbf{b}_{2} \tag{2}\]
3 Show that the lines
\[ l_{1}: \ \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 2 \\ 3 \end{pmatrix}+\lambda\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad l_{2}: \ \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 0 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}+\mu\begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} \]
are skew.
\[ 1+\lambda = 2, \qquad 2+\lambda = \mu, \qquad 3 = 1+\mu \]
The direction vectors are not parallel, since no scalar multiple of \(\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}\) has first component \(0\) and third component \(1\).
Equating components: \(1+\lambda = 2\), \(\ 2+\lambda = \mu\), \(\ 3 = 1+\mu\).
The first gives \(\lambda = 1\) and the third gives \(\mu = 2\), but the second then reads \(3 = 2\), which is false.
The lines are not parallel and do not intersect, so they are skew.
7. The point of intersection(交点)
position vector(位置ベクトル)が出ます。
\[ \mathbf{p} = \mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1} \tag{3}\]
4 Find the point of intersection of
\[ l_{1}: \ \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 0 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}+\lambda\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad l_{2}: \ \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 4 \\ 3 \\ 3 \end{pmatrix}+\mu\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} \]
\[ 1+\lambda = 4+\mu, \qquad \lambda = 3+\mu, \qquad 1 = 3+\mu \]
\[ \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 0 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}+1\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} \]
The direction vectors are not parallel. Equating components:
\[1+\lambda = 4+\mu, \qquad \lambda = 3+\mu, \qquad 1 = 3+\mu\]
The third equation gives \(\mu = -2\), and the second then gives \(\lambda = 1\).
Check in the first: \(1+1 = 2 = 4-2\) ✓
\[\mathbf{p} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 0 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}+\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}\]
- menu → 3: Algebra → 7: Solve System of Equations → 1: Solve System of Equations
- Number of equations に \(3\)、Variables に
Why it works
同じ文字にしてしまうと、\(\mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{2}\) という別の問題になります。
overdetermined(式のほうが多い連立方程式)は、ふつうは解をもちません。
Common errors
Exercises
1 Determine whether the lines with direction vectors \(\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ -2 \\ 3 \end{pmatrix}\) and \(\begin{pmatrix} -2 \\ 4 \\ -6 \end{pmatrix}\) are parallel.
\[\begin{pmatrix} -2 \\ 4 \\ -6 \end{pmatrix} = -2\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ -2 \\ 3 \end{pmatrix}\]
The second is a non-zero scalar multiple of the first, so the lines are parallel.

The lines are parallel and distinct.

\(\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ -1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}\) is not a scalar multiple of \(\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}\), so the lines are not parallel.
The \(z\)-components give \(0 = 1\), which is impossible, so there is no point of intersection.
The lines are skew.

Putting \(\lambda = 3\) in \(l_{1}\) gives \(\begin{pmatrix} 5 \\ -2 \\ 9 \end{pmatrix}\), a point of \(l_{2}\).
The lines are coincident.
7 The lines \(l_{1}: \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}+\lambda\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 0 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}\) and \(l_{2}: \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 0 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}+\mu\begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}\) intersect. Find the point of intersection and the angle between the lines.

8 The lines \(l_{1}: \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 2 \\ 3 \end{pmatrix}+\lambda\begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \\ -1 \end{pmatrix}\) and \(l_{2}: \mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}+\mu\begin{pmatrix} k \\ 2 \\ -2 \end{pmatrix}\) are parallel. Find \(k\), and state whether the lines are coincident.
For the directions to be parallel, \(\begin{pmatrix} k \\ 2 \\ -2 \end{pmatrix} = c\begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \\ -1 \end{pmatrix}\).
The second component gives \(c = 2\), and the third agrees. Hence \(k = 4\).
If \((0,\ 0,\ 0)\) were on \(l_{1}\), then \(1+2\lambda = 0\) gives \(\lambda = -\dfrac{1}{2}\), but then \(y = \dfrac{3}{2} \neq 0\).
The lines are parallel and distinct, not coincident.

If the lines are parallel then one direction vector is a scalar multiple of the other, so \(\begin{pmatrix} k \\ 2 \\ -2 \end{pmatrix} = c\begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \\ -1 \end{pmatrix}\) for some non-zero \(c\).
The second components give \(2 = c\), and the third components then read \(-2 = -2\), which is consistent.
The first components give \(k = 2c = 4\).
Being parallel does not settle whether the lines are the same, so test a point.
The line \(l_{2}\) passes through the origin, so ask whether the origin lies on \(l_{1}\).
The first component requires \(1+2\lambda = 0\), that is \(\lambda = -\dfrac{1}{2}\).
With this value the second component of \(l_{1}\) is \(2-\dfrac{1}{2} = \dfrac{3}{2}\), which is not \(0\).
No single value of \(\lambda\) gives the origin, so the origin is not on \(l_{1}\).
The lines are therefore parallel and distinct, not coincident.
9 Explain why two lines in three dimensions that are not parallel need not intersect, but two lines in two dimensions that are not parallel always do.

Setting the two equations equal gives one equation for each coordinate, with two unknowns \(\lambda\) and \(\mu\).
In two dimensions there are two equations and two unknowns, and non-parallel directions make the system solvable.
In three dimensions there are three equations but still only two unknowns, so the third equation may fail. When it does, the lines are skew.

To find a common point of two lines we set \(\mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\mu\mathbf{b}_{2}\) and compare components.
This produces one linear equation for each coordinate, while the unknowns are always just the two parameters \(\lambda\) and \(\mu\).
In two dimensions this gives two equations in two unknowns.
If the direction vectors are not parallel the two equations are independent, so the system has exactly one solution and the lines meet at exactly one point.
In three dimensions the same comparison gives three equations in the same two unknowns.
Two of them can be solved for \(\lambda\) and \(\mu\), but the third is an extra condition that those values may or may not satisfy.
If it is satisfied the lines intersect; if it is not, no pair of parameter values places the two points together, and the lines are skew.
The extra coordinate is exactly what allows one line to pass above the other without touching it.
10 A student writes: “For \(l_{1}: \mathbf{r} = \mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1}\) and \(l_{2}: \mathbf{r} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{2}\), solve \(\mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{2}\) to find the intersection.” Identify the error and explain what goes wrong.

ある生徒が「\(l_{1}\)、\(l_{2}\) の交点は \(\mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{2}\) を解けばよい」と書きました。
The same letter \(\lambda\) has been used for both lines, but the two parameters are independent.
The equation written down asks for a value of \(\lambda\) that gives the same point on both lines at the same parameter value, which is a stronger condition than intersecting.
The correct equation uses two letters: \(\mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\mu\mathbf{b}_{2}\).

The error is using one letter for two independent parameters.
In \(\mathbf{r} = \mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1}\) the parameter locates a point on the first line, and in \(\mathbf{r} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\mu\mathbf{b}_{2}\) it locates a point on the second.
Nothing ties the two choices together, so they must be allowed to differ.
Writing \(\mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{2}\) asks for a single value of the parameter that gives the same point on both lines.
Read as motion, it asks whether two particles are at the same place at the same time, whereas intersecting only asks whether their paths cross at all.
The condition the student has written is stronger than intersection, so lines that genuinely meet can be declared not to meet.
The correct equation is \(\mathbf{a}_{1}+\lambda\mathbf{b}_{1} = \mathbf{a}_{2}+\mu\mathbf{b}_{2}\), giving three component equations in the two unknowns \(\lambda\) and \(\mu\).
