AHL 4.14 — Linear transformation of a single random variable(確率変数の一次変換)

ノートWhat you should be able to do
  • \(E(aX+b) = aE(X)+b\) と \(\text{Var}(aX+b) = a^{2}\text{Var}(X)\) を使える。

The idea

1. Transforming a random variable(確率変数を動かす)

\[ X \ \longmapsto \ aX + b \tag{1}\]

3. Mean of \(aX+b\)(\(aX+b\) の平均)

\(E(X) = 12\) を代入して \(E(3 \times 12 + 5)\) と書くのは誤りです。

4. Variance of \(aX+b\)(\(aX+b\) の分散)

\[ \text{Var}(aX + b) = a^{2}\,\text{Var}(X) \tag{3}\]

\[ \text{Var}(3X + 5) = 3^{2} \times 9 = 81 \]

5. Standard deviation of \(aX+b\)(\(aX+b\)

\[ \text{sd}(aX + b) = \lvert a \rvert \cdot \text{sd}(X) \tag{4}\]

\(a = -2\)、\(\text{sd}(X) = 3\) なら \(\text{sd}(-2X+1) = 2 \times 3 = 6\) で、\(-6\) ではありません。

公式集にあるのは \(\text{Var}(aX+b) = a^{2}\text{Var}(X)\) までです。

\[ \text{Var}(-2X+1) = 4 \times 9 = 36 \quad \Longrightarrow \quad \text{sd} = \sqrt{36} = 6 \]

1 The random variable \(X\) has \(E(X) = 12\) and \(\text{Var}(X) = 9\).

(a) Find \(E(3X + 5)\) and \(\text{Var}(3X + 5)\).

(b) Find the standard deviation of \(3X + 5\).

(c) Find \(E(-2X + 1)\) and the standard deviation of \(-2X + 1\).

\[ E(3X + 5) = 3E(X) + 5 = 3(12) + 5 = 41 \]

\[ \text{Var}(3X + 5) = 3^{2}\,\text{Var}(X) = 9 \times 9 = 81 \]

\[ \text{sd} = \sqrt{81} = 9 \]

\(\text{sd}(X) = \sqrt{9} = 3\) で、\(\lvert 3 \rvert \times 3 = 9\) ✓ 第5節の \(\lvert a \rvert\) 倍と合っています。

(c) \(a = -2\) です。

\[ E(-2X + 1) = -2(12) + 1 = -23 \]

\[ \text{Var}(-2X + 1) = (-2)^{2} \times 9 = 4 \times 9 = 36 \quad \Longrightarrow \quad \text{sd} = \sqrt{36} = 6 \]

(a) \[ E(3X+5) = 3(12) + 5 = 41 \] \[ \text{Var}(3X+5) = 3^{2}(9) = 81 \]

(b) \[ \text{sd} = \sqrt{81} = 9 \]

(c) \[ E(-2X+1) = -2(12) + 1 = -23 \] \[ \text{Var}(-2X+1) = (-2)^{2}(9) = 36, \qquad \text{sd} = \sqrt{36} = 6 \]

例題 2 In a city, the distance \(X\) travelled by a taxi journey, in km, has mean \(6.5\) and standard deviation \(2.5\).

The fare, in dollars, for a journey is given by \(F = 2.2X + 3.5\).

(a) Find the mean fare.

(b) Find the standard deviation of the fare.

(c) The company increases the fixed charge from $3.5 to $5. Comment on the effect this has on the mean and on the standard deviation of the fare.

(a) \(a = 2.2\)、\(b = 3.5\) です。

\[ E(F) = 2.2 \times 6.5 + 3.5 = 14.3 + 3.5 = 17.80 \]

\[ \text{sd}(F) = 2.2 \times 2.5 = 5.50 \]

Increasing the fixed charge adds a constant to every fare, so the mean increases by $1.50 to $19.30.

The standard deviation is unchanged at $5.50, because adding the same amount to every fare does not change how spread out the fares are.

(a) \[ E(F) = 2.2(6.5) + 3.5 = \$17.80 \]

(b) \[ \text{sd}(F) = 2.2(2.5) = \$5.50 \]

(c) The mean increases by $1.50 to $19.30. The standard deviation is unchanged at $5.50, since adding a constant to every fare does not change the spread.

6. Mean of a linear combination(一次結合の平均)

\[ E(a_1X_1 \pm a_2X_2 \pm \cdots \pm a_nX_n) = a_1E(X_1) \pm a_2E(X_2) \pm \cdots \pm a_nE(X_n) \tag{5}\]

7. Variance of a linear combination(一次結合の分散)

\[ \text{Var}(a_1X_1 \pm a_2X_2 \pm \cdots \pm a_nX_n) = a_1^{2}\text{Var}(X_1) + a_2^{2}\text{Var}(X_2) + \cdots + a_n^{2}\text{Var}(X_n) \tag{6}\]

\[ \text{Var}(2X - 3Y) = 2^{2}(16) + 3^{2}(9) = 64 + 81 = 145 \]

\(a = -3\) を \(a^{2}\) に入れると

\[ (-3)^{2} = 9 \]

式 6 は、independent(独立)な確率変数についての式です。

3 The independent random variables \(X\) and \(Y\) have \(E(X) = 20\), \(\text{Var}(X) = 16\), \(E(Y) = 8\) and \(\text{Var}(Y) = 9\).

(a) Find \(E(2X - 3Y)\).

(b) Find \(\text{Var}(2X - 3Y)\).

(c) Find the standard deviation of \(2X - 3Y\), giving your answer correct to three significant figures.

(d) Explain why \(\text{Var}(X - Y)\) is larger than \(\text{Var}(X)\).

\[ \text{Var}(2X - 3Y) = 2^{2}(16) + 3^{2}(9) = 64 + 81 = 145 \]

(c)

\[ \text{sd} = \sqrt{145} = 12.0416\ldots = 12.0 \]

\[ \text{Var}(X - Y) = 16 + 9 = 25 \ > \ 16 = \text{Var}(X) \]

\(\text{Var}(X-Y) = \text{Var}(X) + \text{Var}(Y) = 16 + 9 = 25\), which is larger than \(\text{Var}(X) = 16\).

Subtracting \(Y\) does not remove the variability of \(Y\): whenever \(Y\) varies, \(X - Y\) varies as well, so the two sources of variability add together.

(a) \[ E(2X-3Y) = 2(20) - 3(8) = 16 \]

(b) \[ \text{Var}(2X-3Y) = 2^{2}(16) + (-3)^{2}(9) = 64 + 81 = 145 \]

(c) \[ \text{sd} = \sqrt{145} = 12.0 \]

(d) \(\text{Var}(X-Y) = 16 + 9 = 25 > 16\). Subtracting \(Y\) does not remove the variability of \(Y\), so the two variances add.

\[ \text{Var}(2X) = 4\,\text{Var}(X), \qquad \text{Var}(X_1 + X_2) = 2\,\text{Var}(X) \]

(E\) \(\text{Var}\) sd

the total mass of two bags \(X_1 + X_2\)
the mass of two bags \(X_1 + X_2\)
twice the mass of one bag \(2X\)
the price is doubled \(2X\)
the total cost of 5 tickets \(X_1 + \cdots + X_5\)

\[ E(X_1 + \cdots + X_n) = nE(X), \qquad \text{Var}(X_1 + \cdots + X_n) = n\,\text{Var}(X) \tag{7}\]

4 A machine fills bags of rice. The mass, in kg, of a bag is a random variable \(X\) with mean \(5\) and standard deviation \(0.2\). The masses of different bags are independent.

(a) Find the mean and standard deviation of the total mass of two bags.

(b) Find the mean and standard deviation of \(2X\).

(c) Explain why your answers to parts (a) and (b) have the same mean but different standard deviations.

(d) Find the standard deviation of the total mass of ten bags.

\[ E(X_1 + X_2) = 5 + 5 = 10 \]

\[ \text{Var}(X_1 + X_2) = 0.04 + 0.04 = 0.08 \quad \Longrightarrow \quad \text{sd} = \sqrt{0.08} = 0.283 \]

\[ E(2X) = 2(5) = 10 \]

\[ \text{Var}(2X) = 2^{2}(0.04) = 0.16 \quad \Longrightarrow \quad \text{sd} = \sqrt{0.16} = 0.4 \]

Both have mean \(10\) kg, since each is \(2E(X) = 2(5)\).

For \(X_1 + X_2\) there are two separate bags, so a heavy bag can be balanced by a light one and the variances add: \(\text{Var} = 2(0.04) = 0.08\).

For \(2X\) there is only one bag, and its deviation from the mean is doubled, so \(\text{Var} = 2^{2}(0.04) = 0.16\).

The total of two bags is therefore less variable than one doubled bag.

\[ \text{Var} = 10 \times 0.04 = 0.4 \quad \Longrightarrow \quad \text{sd} = \sqrt{0.4} = 0.632 \]

\(\text{sd}(X) \times \sqrt{10} = 0.2 \times 3.162\ldots = 0.632\) ✓

(a) \[ E(X_1 + X_2) = 10, \qquad \text{Var} = 2(0.04) = 0.08, \qquad \text{sd} = 0.283 \]

(b) \[ E(2X) = 10, \qquad \text{Var} = 2^{2}(0.04) = 0.16, \qquad \text{sd} = 0.4 \]

(c) Both means are \(10\) kg. For \(X_1 + X_2\) the two bags are separate, so a heavy bag can be offset by a light one and the variances add. For \(2X\) the deviation of a single bag is doubled, giving four times the variance. So \(2X\) has the larger standard deviation.

(d) \[ \text{Var} = 10(0.04) = 0.4, \qquad \text{sd} = \sqrt{0.4} = 0.632 \]

9. Unbiased estimate of the mean(母平均の不偏推定値)

\[ \bar{x} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \frac{x_i}{n} \tag{8}\]

10. Unbiased estimate of the variance(母分散の不偏推定値)

\[ s_{n-1}^{2} = \frac{n}{n-1}\,s_n^{2} = \sum_{i=1}^{k} \frac{f_i(x_i - \bar{x})^{2}}{n-1}, \qquad n = \sum_{i=1}^{k} f_i \tag{9}\]

\[ s_{n-1}^{2} = \frac{n}{n-1}s_n^{2} = \frac{8}{7} \times 5.25 = 6 \quad ✓ \]

Find the standard deviation of the data. \(\sigma_x\)
The data set is the population. \(\sigma_x\)
Find an unbiased estimate of the population variance. \(s_x\)
Find an unbiased estimate of \(\sigma^{2}\) \(s_x\)

  • an unbiased estimate of the population variance(母分散の不偏推定値)と書かれていれば、答えは \(s_x^{2}\) です

an unbiased estimate of the population variance

5 A sample of eight measurements is taken from a large population.

\[ 12, \quad 15, \quad 11, \quad 18, \quad 14, \quad 16, \quad 13, \quad 17 \]

(a) Write down an unbiased estimate of the population mean.

(b) Find an unbiased estimate of the population variance.

(c) A student uses technology and writes down \(\sigma_x = 2.29\) as the answer to part (b). Explain what is wrong with this.

\[ \bar{x} = \frac{116}{8} = 14.5 \]

\[ s_{n-1}^{2} = 2.4494\ldots^{2} = 6 \]

\[ s_{n-1}^{2} = \frac{42}{8-1} = \frac{42}{7} = 6 \quad ✓ \]

There are two errors.

First, \(\sigma_x\) divides by \(n\), not by \(n-1\), so it is not an unbiased estimate of the population variance.

The unbiased estimate uses \(s_x\), which divides by \(n-1\).

Second, the question asks for a variance, so the value must be squared: the answer is \(s_{n-1}^{2} = 6\), not a standard deviation.

(a) \[ \bar{x} = 14.5 \]

(b) \[ s_{n-1}^{2} = \frac{42}{7} = 6 \]

(c) \(\sigma_x\) divides by \(n\) rather than \(n-1\), so it is not unbiased; and it is a standard deviation, whereas the question asks for a variance. The correct answer is \(s_{n-1}^{2} = 6\).

Why it works

\[ ax - a\mu = a(x - \mu) \]

Common errors

twice the mass of one bag

警告standard deviation を \(a\) 倍ではなく \(a^{2}\) 倍にする

\(\text{Var}\) が \(a^{2}\) 倍、sd は \(\lvert a \rvert\) 倍です(第5節)。

an unbiased estimate of the population variance

\(E(3X+5)\) を \(E(3 \times 12 + 5)\) と書いてしまう誤りです。

Using your GDC (TI-Nspire CX II)

menu → Statistics → Stat Calculations → One-Variable Statistics

2. Unbiased estimate of the variance(分散の不偏推定値を出す)

\(\texttt{stat.sx}^{2}\)

3. Variance from a binomial distribution(二項分布から分散を出す)

\[ \text{Var}(X) = np(1-p) \]

4. Square root last(平方根は最後にとる)

\[ \sqrt{2^{2}(16) + 3^{2}(9)} \]

Exercises

1 The random variable \(X\) has \(E(X) = 15\) and \(\text{Var}(X) = 4\). Find \(E(2X+7)\), \(\text{Var}(2X+7)\) and the standard deviation of \(2X+7\).

\[ E(2X+7) = 2(15) + 7 = 37 \] \[ \text{Var}(2X+7) = 2^{2}(4) = 16 \] \[ \text{sd} = \sqrt{16} = 4 \]

2 The random variable \(X\) has \(E(X) = 30\) and standard deviation \(5\). Find \(E(0.5X - 2)\) and the standard deviation of \(0.5X - 2\).

\[ E(0.5X - 2) = 0.5(30) - 2 = 13 \] \[ \text{Var}(X) = 5^{2} = 25 \] \[ \text{Var}(0.5X - 2) = 0.5^{2}(25) = 6.25, \qquad \text{sd} = \sqrt{6.25} = 2.5 \]

3 A shop’s daily takings \(T\), in yen, have mean \(84\,000\) and standard deviation \(12\,000\). The shop’s daily profit is given by \(P = 0.4T - 25\,000\).

(a) Find the mean daily profit.

(b) Find the standard deviation of the daily profit.

(c) The shop’s fixed daily costs rise from \(25\,000\) yen to \(28\,000\) yen. State the effect on the standard deviation of the daily profit, and give a reason.

(a) \[ E(P) = 0.4(84\,000) - 25\,000 = 33\,600 - 25\,000 = 8600 \text{ yen} \]

(b) \[ \text{sd}(P) = 0.4(12\,000) = 4800 \text{ yen} \]

(c) There is no effect: the standard deviation stays at \(4800\) yen. The fixed cost is a constant subtracted from every day’s profit, and subtracting the same amount from every value shifts them all together without changing how spread out they are.

(a)(b) \(a = 0.4\)、\(b = -25\,000\) です。

(c) give a reason

The standard deviation is unchanged at \(4800\) yen.

Raising the fixed cost subtracts the same constant from every day’s profit, so all the values shift together and the spread between them is unaffected.

4 The independent random variables \(X\) and \(Y\) have \(E(X) = 10\), \(\text{Var}(X) = 3\), \(E(Y) = 6\) and \(\text{Var}(Y) = 5\).

(a) Find \(E(X + Y)\) and \(\text{Var}(X + Y)\).

(b) Find \(E(X - Y)\) and \(\text{Var}(X - Y)\).

(a) \[ E(X+Y) = 10 + 6 = 16, \qquad \text{Var}(X+Y) = 3 + 5 = 8 \]

(b) \[ E(X-Y) = 10 - 6 = 4, \qquad \text{Var}(X-Y) = 3 + 5 = 8 \]

5 Two independent random variables \(A\) and \(B\) have the same variance \(v\). Explain why \(\text{Var}(A - B)\) is equal to \(2v\) and not to \(0\).

\[ \text{Var}(A - B) = 1^{2}\text{Var}(A) + (-1)^{2}\text{Var}(B) = v + v = 2v \]

The coefficient of \(B\) is \(-1\), and squaring it gives \(+1\), so the two variances add rather than cancel. Subtracting \(B\) does not remove its variability: if \(B\) varies then \(A - B\) varies too, so both sources of variability contribute.

Explain why

In the formula the coefficient of \(B\) is \(-1\), and \((-1)^{2} = 1\), so \(\text{Var}(A-B) = v + v = 2v\).

Subtracting \(B\) does not cancel its variability: since \(A\) and \(B\) are independent, \(A\) may be large while \(B\) is small, making \(A - B\) large.

The variance could only be \(0\) if \(A - B\) never varied, which independence rules out.

6 The length, in cm, of a metal rod produced by a machine is a random variable \(X\) with mean \(4.2\) and standard deviation \(0.15\). The lengths of different rods are independent.

(a) Find the mean and standard deviation of the total length of three rods placed end to end.

(b) Find the mean and standard deviation of \(3X\).

(c) State which of the two situations in parts (a) and (b) has the greater standard deviation, and give a reason.

\[ \text{Var}(X) = 0.15^{2} = 0.0225 \]

(a) \[ E = 3(4.2) = 12.6 \text{ cm} \] \[ \text{Var} = 3(0.0225) = 0.0675, \qquad \text{sd} = \sqrt{0.0675} = 0.260 \text{ cm} \]

(b) \[ E(3X) = 3(4.2) = 12.6 \text{ cm} \] \[ \text{Var}(3X) = 3^{2}(0.0225) = 0.2025, \qquad \text{sd} = \sqrt{0.2025} = 0.45 \text{ cm} \]

(c) \(3X\) has the greater standard deviation (\(0.45\) cm against \(0.260\) cm). In (a) there are three separate rods, so a long rod can be offset by a short one and the variances add to give \(3\text{Var}(X)\). In (b) there is only one rod whose deviation is tripled, giving \(3^{2}\text{Var}(X)\).

(c) give a reason

\(3X\) has the greater standard deviation.

With three separate rods, a rod that is too long can be balanced by one that is too short, so the variances add: \(\text{Var} = 3(0.0225) = 0.0675\).

With \(3X\) there is a single rod whose deviation from the mean is tripled, so \(\text{Var} = 3^{2}(0.0225) = 0.2025\).

7 A sample of five values is taken from a population.

\[ 22, \quad 25, \quad 19, \quad 24, \quad 20 \]

(a) Write down an unbiased estimate of the population mean.

(b) Find an unbiased estimate of the population variance.

(a) \[ \bar{x} = \frac{110}{5} = 22 \]

(b) \[ s_{n-1}^{2} = \frac{26}{5-1} = \frac{26}{4} = 6.5 \]

8 For a sample of \(10\) values, \(s_n = 3.6\), where \(s_n\) is the standard deviation found by dividing by \(n\). Find an unbiased estimate of the population variance.

\[ s_n^{2} = 3.6^{2} = 12.96 \] \[ s_{n-1}^{2} = \frac{n}{n-1}s_n^{2} = \frac{10}{9} \times 12.96 = 14.4 \]

\[ s_{n-1}^{2} = \frac{n}{n-1}s_n^{2} \]

\[ \frac{10}{9} \times 12.96 = \frac{129.6}{9} = 14.4 \]

9 The random variable \(X\) follows a binomial distribution with \(X \sim B(50,\ 0.3)\).

(a) Find \(E(X)\) and \(\text{Var}(X)\).

(b) Find \(E(2X + 1)\) and \(\text{Var}(2X + 1)\).

(a) \[ E(X) = np = 50(0.3) = 15 \] \[ \text{Var}(X) = np(1-p) = 50(0.3)(0.7) = 10.5 \]

(b) \[ E(2X+1) = 2(15) + 1 = 31 \] \[ \text{Var}(2X+1) = 2^{2}(10.5) = 42 \]

(a) \(\text{Var}(X)\)

10 The random variable \(X\) has \(E(X) = 8\) and \(\text{Var}(X) = 2\). Let \(Y = 3X\) and let \(Z = X_1 + X_2 + X_3\), where \(X_1\), \(X_2\) and \(X_3\) are independent and have the same distribution as \(X\).

(a) Show that \(E(Y) = E(Z)\).

(b) Find the standard deviation of \(Y\) and the standard deviation of \(Z\), giving your answers correct to three significant figures.

(c) Interpret the difference between the two standard deviations in part (b).

(a) \[ E(Y) = 3E(X) = 3(8) = 24 \] \[ E(Z) = E(X_1) + E(X_2) + E(X_3) = 8 + 8 + 8 = 24 \] \[ \text{so } E(Y) = E(Z) = 24 \]

(b) \[ \text{Var}(Y) = 3^{2}(2) = 18, \qquad \text{sd}(Y) = \sqrt{18} = 4.24 \] \[ \text{Var}(Z) = 2 + 2 + 2 = 6, \qquad \text{sd}(Z) = \sqrt{6} = 2.45 \]

(c) Both \(Y\) and \(Z\) have mean \(24\), but \(Z\) is much less variable than \(Y\). \(Z\) is the total of three separate observations, so a value above the mean can be offset by one below it, and the variances add to \(3\text{Var}(X)\). \(Y\) is a single observation multiplied by \(3\), so its deviation from the mean is tripled and the variance becomes \(3^{2}\text{Var}(X)\).

(b) \(\text{Var}(Y) = 9(2) = 18\)、\(\text{Var}(Z) = 3(2) = 6\)。

Both have the same mean of \(24\), but \(Z\) has the smaller standard deviation (\(2.45\) against \(4.24\)).

\(Z\) adds up three independent observations, so an observation above the mean can be balanced by one below it.

\(Y\) triples a single observation, so whatever that one observation does is magnified threefold.

Adding together several separate observations is therefore more stable than scaling up a single one.
